Original era manufacture. Adopted for field trials by the US Cavalry and once fitted with the large, leather padded, fold-down ring which secured the muzzle of the rifle when mounted. These contraptions were quickly found to be very cumbersome and unwieldy (not too mention outright dangerous)for the trooper. Subsequently many of the existing belts were modified with the removal of the muzzle ring and issued as a normal cartridge belt. This example is of Mills mfg, retains near new color and finish, and is a prime example of its type and US Army thriftiness.
