Original era issue. A nice group of identified medals purchased at our last Mesa Arizona Military Show. The grouping includes a Navy Good Conduct Medal named to Cecil Joseph Nunes (1940 date), a US Navy Yangtze Service Medal M.No. 4666, and a US Navy 2nd Nicaragua Medal M.No.4350. An Ancestry search reveals very little about this sailor. What I did find was a listing dated August 1940, from the USS Neosho, assigning Nunes, Cecil J, 2043069, SC1c, assigning him to the USS Arizona for duty. His name and service number again appears in 1946, aboard the USS General William Mitchell. Further, a Department of Veterans Affairs Death File, provides the following, born 1908, died 1984, 1st enlistment 1926 and final discharge in 1947. The gap between 1940 and 1946, may indicate time spent as a prisoner of the Japanese, certainly considering his Yangtze Service Medal. This very nice grouping is worthy of additional research. The medals & ribbons are all in sound condition, the GC & Yangtze have full wrap brooches, the 2nd Nic has a partial wrap brooch, with the medals being accompanied by a matching, Navy ribbon style, 3-place bar.
