Original period manufacture. Massive, thick steel, 15 inch curved blade with wooden grips secured with four brass rivets. The blade surface is rather crude, showing casting marks, which may be accounted for being an emergency production of sorts for the Spanish-American War, and subsequent Philippine Insurrection. Our troops were not prepared for jungle combat, and a stop-gap means of dealing with the dense brush had to be found and Collins & Co. provided the answer. Standard tooled leather scabbard with a brass throat and tip, known as pattern 1005. Hand stamped into the body of the scabbard is the unit designation for A Company 115th Engineers. Overall sound, some scuffing and dryness to the leather scabbard, no chips or cracks in the wooden grips. Evidence of an old glue repair to the scabbard tip.
