Original era manufacture. Gilded brass enlisted hat insignia for Company M, 71st New York Infantry. Screwpost back, Measuring 50 mm in width. Sent to Cuba in May 1898, they supported the Rough Riders during their famous charge, and later were engaged during the battles around Santiago. All the while armed with single-shot, black powder 45-70 rifles, with their Spanish opponents being equipped with modern magazine fed, smokeless powder Mausers. One source states that Company M was the Color Company.
