Original era manufacture. 1895 pattren officers undress coat of dark blue wool with black mohair braid on collar and front. Black polished cotton lining, with striped tan cotton sleeve lining. Carefully stitched onto the collar are the gilt brass letters USV, each is separated from the other by three individual periods in the same pattern of construction. On each shoulder are what appear to be Civil War era Smith's pattern shoulder straps, in Cavalry yellow, and rank of 2nd Lieutenant. They look to be original to the uniform, as the stitching is properly done and they certainly have been in place for a good while. There certainly would have been enough Civil War cavalry officer straps in tailor shop inventories back in 1898, to allow these to be also original to the coat. No major moth issues to report, no stains, holes or tears. With a coat of this age there will always be some interference from our Lepidoptera friends, the common moth. The only visible wear is seen on the back of the collar, with a small snag placed at center. The kersey blue private purchase trousers 32 inch waist, and 32 inch inseam. Two front and hip pockets, with watch pocket and belt loops. On each outer seam is a one inch wide stripe of golden yellow ribbed material, running from the top of the waist to the cuff. Button fly secured with black plastic buttons, no suspender buttons, never had them. There are spots of scattered mothing, but nothing really detracting. The trousers I feel to be of later manufacture perhaps the 1930's, but make a nice addition for display.
