Original era manufacture. White canvas topped, wicker-bodied hat, Herman Cohn Navy Uniforms & Furnishings stamped on the sweatband. Black mohair removable cap band with a pair of directly embroidered crossed anchors in gold wire on the front of the hat. Officers quality gold brocade chinstrap, secured by two US Navy eagle side buttons. Sadly, my library is weak on information on the US Navy of the 19th century uniform-wise, however my copy of Volume III American Military Equipage by Frederick P. Todd, illustrates a similar insignia as worn at least until 1872 by Navy Petty Officers. Not crushed or broken, normal age and wear overall, size about a 6 1/2.
