Original era manufacture. Civil War pattern ladder badge but produced for service in the Spanish American War. This example was worn by 1st Lieutenant Evan S. Witemeyer of Company D, 4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. The 4th Pa Volunteers went to Porto Rico in 1898, participated in active operations but no direct combat prior to the cessation of hostilities. They lost 3 officers and 32 men to disease.
