Original era manufacture. Nice quality bronze medal and suspension with its original red-white-blue silk ribbon. Named on the reverse to George W. Hoffman Co E 33rd Michigan Volunteers. During the War with Spain, the 33rd Michigan was one of the few NG regiments to actually reach the seat of war arriving in Cuba in June of 1898 in time to participate in the battle of Aguadores on July 1. Armed with single shot 45-70 rifles firing black powder ammunition, the 33rd participated in this battle losing 3 soldiers killed. However Yellow Fever proved to be a far greater menace than the Spanish Mauser as 50 men died from the disease while in camp or homeward bound in troop transports.
