Original period manufacture. This great piece of Trench Art, was made from a complete US Navy 6 pdr projectile and case. The pair were produced by Winchester Repeating Arms Company, of a Hotchkiss pattern round, first patented in 1874 as marked on the base of the casing. The trench-art decoration on the side of the case is of excellent quality, displaying a sailing ship in full rig, encased within a wreath of laurel leaves and flowers; at the bottom is a riband declaring the ship to be..."An Ocean Beauty". On the reverse of the decoration is an inscription reading, "To Aunt Susie, From Whelan". The copper driving bands of the projectile display very clear markings for both Winchester and Hotchkiss, with the first patent date being November 14-76.The base of the casing displays the Winchester information along with an early Hotchkiss patent date of December-74. In addition, a manufacture date of 4-?0 appears, although the last two digits have been struck out, with the zero remaining fairly clear, and I believe the first is either an 8 or 9.The steel projectile displays a dark corrosion patina finish, with a small brass cap at the end.
