Item #69689 : Original period manufacture. Identified grouping with ownership provenance back to 1987. The lot includes a M1885 Foot Artillery enlisted dress coat, 1898 Soldiers Handbook with many notations, War with Spain Campaign Medal, Numbered 7806, Royal Spanish Army enlisted buckle, lot of Spanish buttons. The grouping was once the property of Private Vanburen "Bert" Howard United States Army, who enlisted in the regular army in September 1898 in Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania. He served with Battery E 4th US Artillery then stationed at Fortress Monroe Virginia. He was honorably discharged on 1 March 1899. He reenlisted on 17 May 1899, this time for the mounted service, Troop L, 8th Cavalry, and was sent to Puerto Principe, Santiago Cuba. He served briefly in this capacity and was discharged due to health reasons a few months later. Numerous sheets of printed information accompany the grouping in the form of discharges, muster rolls and receipts of the original sale in 1987. The coat is in sound condition for its age, few pinhole moth bites, and a seam split in the top rear edge of the collar. Colors are bright, all buttons are present.
