Original era manufacture. US WWI M1918 aluminum messkit. The owners name or initials appear on both the lid and bottom of the messkit, E.J.Thornton, service number 3077700. Missing the small looped finger pull on the lid. Should be a fun research project. Evidently his son used the messkit in the Boy Scouts post war, as the name Norman Thornton Troop 133 also appears. Founded in 1940, Troop 133 was located in Indianapolis Indiana.
