US WWI Era Army Officer Dress Brass Buckle, Possible General Officer

Original era manufacture. Heavy, gilded brass construction with an applied central eagle, and a simple hook catch on the reverse. The keeper, or catch is missing. Measures 60 mm in overall width, with the central medallion measuring 50 mm. When we first purchased this buckle, I thought it might have been a decorative buckle for a lady, but due to the weight of the thing, I now believe it to have another purpose. It is quite similar to the WWII era US Army General Officer's buckle, that can be found attached to the GO brown leather pistol belt & holster sets. However the buckles that I have observed on those have always been an interlocking, male to female pattern. Perhaps a private purchase example, certainly a well made, and intriguing buckle.
