Original era manufacture. One of the early efforts by the US government to develop our own, unique pattern helmet to be worn in the trenches of WWI. According to Chris Arnold's book "Steel Pots" the number 5 helmet stood the best chance of all of the tested helmets being adopted for wear, its close resemblance to the German helmet of the time was a deciding factor in its not being chosen. Our example displays a very nice original rough texture paint finish, its original chinstrap is dry but unbroken, however the liner, while complete, is in poor condition. I believe that if some care and time were taken, the leather pads could be backed, and re-attached to the leather liner band.
