Original era manufacture. This is a fairly complete example of the M1917 Doughboy steel helmet with three rings on each side to attach the experimental Wilmer Shield. A steel curtain-like device intended to reduce eye wounds from shell splinters. This was an experimental device and was not adopted for general use. On the front of the helmet is an original handpainted insignia for the 7th Infantry Division which served in France during WWI. The underside of the oilcloth liner is unmarked, and the gray felt liner top shows damage from wear and use. The chinstrap is unbroken with some surface dryness. Sound unmolested example overall.
