Original period manufacture. A private purchase hat with aNew Yorkcap tally embroidered in gold wire with a real silk backing material. Standard blue wool top with apurple silklining.Overall the hat is in sound condition, The silk cap tallyshows normal age and wear with no fraying, and the lettering has toned with age. The silk lining has frayed as shown, size tag inside the sweatband marked 7 1/4. The USS New York (BB-34) entered service with the US Navy in 1914, she saw convoy service during WWI, and likely sank a German U-Boat (possibly UB-113 or UB-123)by accidentally ramming it while the sub was submerged. The hull of the USS New York was dented by the sub's bow, and several blades from one of her propellers were broken off when the sub exploded. The only US ship to sink a German vessel during WWI.During WWII she supported the landings in North Africa during Operation Torch in 1942. In late 1944 she was ordered to the Pacific where she supported the Iwo Jima landings, and later the Okinawa Campaign, where she was struck by a single Kamikaze.Postwar she survived the Bikini tests, and was returned to Pearl Harborfor study, and later sunk as a target ship in July 1948.
