Original period manufacture. Standard issue Sailor's dress hat of the era but with a private purchase bullion embroidered cap tally for the "Lake-Type" submarine of the US Navy. Named on the interior to the original owner. There is some considerable moth damage, howeverthe historical importance of the hat is revealed in the history of the USS S-2 (USS 106) Submarine. She was commissioned in May of 1920 and after trials and testing, shebegan an epic journey under her own power to the Philippines. Prior to this cruise by the USS S2and other boats of SubDiv 18 and 12, boats were transported to the Far East by being lashed to the decks of colliers. She served in this station until 1929, visiting numerous Chinese ports during that time, likely where the sailor picked up his fancy cap tally. She was recalled to Philidelphia in 1929, arriving there in August of that year (again under her own power, via Pearl Harbor & Panama Canal). Stricken from the Navy list in 1931 and sold later that year.
