Original era manufacture. A complete US M1917 steel helmet in original rough texture combat finish, adjustable painted canvas liner with instruction tag, and an intact brown leather chinstrap. The underside of the lining is maker marked R.H. LONG and dated 1917. The lining is sound, no flaking to the surface, the adjustable netting is in good shape, with no mothing to the gray wool felt lining pad.As stated the leather chinstrap is intact, it is pliable with no weak areas, but does exhibit dryness and light flaking to the surfaces.Mounted to the front of the helmet is a darkened bronze, WWI era USMC enlisted EGA, with the diagonal line through the continents. The EGA looks as if it has been on there a good while, but unless these come out of an estate with solid provenance, I feel they must always be considered to be a WWI helmet with a Marine emblem on it, and priced accordingly. A fine representative piece, and as this comes out of an old collection here in Arizona there is a good chance that it is a real Devil Dog helmet. It's how they were done..
