Original era manufacture. This is a wonderful example of a GI modified bayonet made into a fighting knife. Perhaps because of several of its features, we feelmight have been made during the North African or Sicily Campaign during WWII. It is based on a 1912 dated, M1905 bayonet which has been cut-down to an 8.5 inch length with an Arabian style clipped point. The soldier then took a discarded M1923 Rifleman's belt and used the closure frame as a make shiftguard after removing the T-Bar or square connector. Next clear plexiglas from a downed aircraft was used to fashion a set of grips, beneath which he placed photos of his loved ones. The scabbard utilizes a cut-down 1942 pattern plastic bayonet and a WWII Italian leather bayonet frog (itself modified by having a Germanbayonet frog pommel strap riveted in place)forwearing on his belt. Overall the knife shows considerable wear and use with someoverspray of garage paint on its reverse and the closure portion of the German pommel strap torn. A great WWII relic, too bad we'll never know its full history.
