Original era manufacture. This great little grouping consists of a WWII German Army officers bullion wire breast eagle, and a letter home, written by the GI who removed the eagle from an "SS" officer, and sent it on to his folks at home. The letter is very well written, and nicely detailed in the description to his parents regarding the surrender leaflet and breast eagle. Also included is the original mailing envelope identifying the soldiers unit as the 11th Engineer Combat Battalion. What the letter says that pertains to the eagle is:"The other item enclosed is an insignia from the uniform of an SS First Lieutenant - it belonged to the German Officer - now a major - whose hospitality we are enjoyingat this time - of course, he doesn't know about it. This is a legitimate souvenir - anything belonging to the Nazi Government, any Nazi uniform, or anything which might be used against us, is legitimately taken. Private property taken is loot and carries a stiff court martial sentence."He doesn't state exactly where it was acquired. He was in the Seventh Army, Germany and the letter is dated Monday, march 26, 1945.Normal handling and wear.
