Original era manufacture. This amazing trunk lid was found at a local estate here in Arizona, the bottom portion was evidently past saving, but the estate sales folks had the presence of mind to save this wonderfully hand-decorated lid. The trunk once served the needs of a US Navy sailor who served as an Armed Guard on Merchant Ships from 1943-1945, with earlier service aboard other vessels as noted. Evidently one of the Merchant ships was under aerial attack as two"Kill" marks for German planes are painted on the lid below the Jonancy & Abe Lincoln. I did aquick internetsearchfor these two ships and the sailor's name shows upon the Armed Guard website,, giving his service time on the Jonancy in '43, the Abe Lincoln in '44 and the MV Rhode Island in '45. The US Navy Armed Guards saw a lot of combat during WWII as they often provided the only means of protection aboard the slow moving Merchantconvoys carrying supplies and troops overseas. Excellent research potential, and displays really well. Measures 14x21 inches.
