Original period manufacture. This is the second example of this shipboard made "Kill" tally that we have owned in our time. Virtually identical so they must have been made for distribution to sailors on the ship. The first example came to us12-15 years ago and was sold back in the Dark Ages when we published paper lists to send to our customers. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the ship. The tally is made from a 16x16 inch white cotton handkerchief with a Japanese Navy pattern flag stenciled at the top. Below that is stenciled a palm tree with five hashmarks indicating island campaigns, next a profile of a Japanese ship with a single hashmark below and lastly a stenciled aircraft with six hashmarks for six "kills". Light age and wear, no damage.
