Original era manufacture. Shipboard conversion of what looks to be a Japanese Type 30 bayonet blade, cast aluminum grip including sections of stacked leather and decorative pommel. The blade measures 6.5 inches in length, with a blood groove on each side. Heavy, stitched leather sheath, the reverse of which is incised, Schaffener, C.C. U.S.S. Mobile 1943. Ancestry provides the following information, Cletus Charles Schaffner, served aboard the Light Cruiser, USS Mobile (Cl-63) from 31 December 1943, to 1 November 1945. During that time, the USS Mobile received 11 Battle Stars for her service, including aiding in the sinking of the IJN light Aircraft Carrier Chiyoda.
