Original period manufacture. Mix of thick chenille embroidery, with a blue wool felt flying bird. The patch measures 5 inches across, displaying age and wear from use. White gauze covered reverse.The 464th Fighter Squadron served with the 507th Fighter Group then stationed on Okinawa in August 1945. They were equipped with long-range versions of the P-47 Thunderbolt, which were intended to provide escort protection to the B-29's flying bombing missions over the Japanese home islands.Of note, the last US WWII "Ace In A Day" , was a lieutenant in the 464th, who downed four Japanese Nakajima Oscar type fighters and a Yokosuka Willow type trainer on August 13th 1945. Lieutenant Oscar F. Perdomo. Of further note, he took his initial flight training right here in Chandler Arizona, at an AAF Pilot Training School which is better known as Williams AFB.
