Original era manufacture. US WWII 1st pattern USMC canteen cover, stenciled tactical symbol, identifying the Marine as a member of 23rd Rgt, 3rd Bn, Co.L, 4th Marine Division. On the reverse is a stenciled name, F.H.SONNENBERG. Ancestry reveals a number of listings for his WWII Marine Corps service beginning in October 1942, and ending in October 1945. A casualty listing (type SS-CF) in the US Marine Corps Casualty Indexes 1940-1958, gives a casualty date of 19 February 1945. The 23rd regiment was the divisional reserve for the 4th Division, on the 19th of February, landing in the second wave of the assault on Iwo Jima on that day.
