Original era manufacture. US WWII USMC Shovel cover, stenciled tactical symbol, identifying the Marine as a member of 23rd Rgt, 3rd Bn, HQ.Co, 4th Marine Division. Above the tactical symbol is the number 2, indicating his rank of Corporal. Within the emblem is the stenciled name, H.PEDDLE. A casualty listing (type SS-CF) in the US Marine Corps Casualty Indexes 1940-1958, gives a casualty date for Howard Peddle, (now a Gunnery Sergeant) of 3 March 1945. The 23rd regiment was the divisional reserve for the 4th Division on the 19th of February, landing in the second wave of the assault on Iwo Jima on that day. Staining to the cover, with minor fraying on the edges.
