Original era manufacture. A fine quality full dress set, named to A.E.Smith who purchased the uniform from F.J. Schmidt Co. Annapolis, Maryland in 1915. With the coat is a matching material set of trousers with a wide gold brocade stripe, named to Alan E. Smith, with the then rank of Commander. The coat was modified over the years with the appropriate cuff rank changed and the silk lining of the sleeves removed. These were expensive sets to purchase, and their likely wear times limited, so these were kept by the officers and modified as needed. No moth issues are noted, the set comes with an extra set of plain Navy officers trousers. Alan Edward Smith was born in 1892, graduating from Annapolis in 1915, he died in 1987. He is buried at the Naval Academy at Annapolis. During WWII he commanded USS South Dakota from 1 August 1943, to 30 March 1944. During those months the South Dakota participated in shore bombardments of Nauru Island (December 1943), Roi and Namur Islands, Kawajalein Atoll 30 January 1944. He was transferred to the command of Cruiser Division 5 during he bombardment of Okinawa. The Admiral served during the Korean War, and later directed the efforts of refloating the USS Missouri when she went aground. He was awarded three Legion of Merits and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal.
