Original era manufacture. A very well made aluminum matchbox cover, which has a Prussian NCO button affixed to one side, and a French Engineer's button on the other side. The spine of the cover displays the suites of a deck of cards, clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades, nicely cut-out of the aluminum, a similar decoration can be seen surrounding the Prussian button on two sides, using only hearts and diamonds. Carefully incised into the side of the cover on the French button side, are the words "Verdun Front" and the date of September 26 1918.It shows wear and use, and evidence of splitting on one end of the spine. Some kind soul inserted an old matchbox into the void, and once more allowing this old safe to do its job.
